Oh! Maybe I fail to remember that special electives are less important and probably do not increase students CGPAs, which explains the nonchalant attitude place on it by students and authorities alike.
I happened to find myself in the Faculty of Pharmacy for a special elective class titled;Drugs and the Society II,which is also known as SEP002. My experience in this class is nothing to write home about. Though am still considering "dropping" it, as my contemporaries would say.
More than 50% of the students population takes atleast a restricted electives every semester. Of which provision should be made for lecture theatres that complement this population. Majority of the special electives I have been offering since my admission into this prestigious university have always been held in more spacious lecture theatres;Amphi theatre and 1000seaters lecture theatre to be precise. Why is Pharmacy's SEP002 a different case?
In my opinion, the answer to the above question could possibly be because the faculty think itself as not being a section of the university, hence it special electives classes should not exceed the four walls of their faculty. If not how on earth will a lecture theatre not big enough to accomodate 200 students be used for a lecture meant for nothing less than 1,500 students?! Anyone familiar with or has been to the Marquis lecture theatre in the Department of Pharmacy will share my perception. This is also another 2-hour elective class where writing of attendance is compulsory. With the state of the class, you can call this a sheer cruelty!
If a lecture theatre is conducive, every student is under compulsion to attend the lecture and attendance, a mandate. Irrespective of the course:electives or core Courses.
So I will say this act displayed by the Faculty of Pharmacy towards this particular special elective is not an encouraging way of making students attend electives lectures. Although there are other faculties guilty of the same act but the question is:who truly deserves the blame, faculties or management?
