THE COLUMNIST: THE MENACE OF DRUG ABUSE IN NIGERIA

 By Olatunji S. Tolulope

DRUG abuse has become an odoriferous deed that is very prevalent in the society today, in which it has become a matter of constant debate in Nigeria. Prior to its prevalence, the case of drug abuse was insidious in our society then, now it has become an act that has reached a frightening proportion. It has become the order of the day in which is very heinous in our society. Articles are being written, orientations and programmes are organized on this same act but this act still persists.

Furthermore, let me define drug abuse. Drug abuse is a patterned use of a drug in which the user consumes the substance in amounts or with methods which are harmful to themselves or others, and is a form of substance related to disorder. Drug abuse have been incessant for a lot of youth today due to the regular intake. According to studies like National Survey on Drug Abuse indicates that some youth are already abusing drug at the age of 12 or 13, which is likely means that some begin even earlier. Early abuse often includes such substance as tobacco, alcohol, inhalants, marijuana and Indian hemp, heroine which affects their brains. They take these drugs because they want to be in fashion. Nevertheless, most of them constitute themselves into nuisance to the society and end up in psychiatric hospitals.

In addition, There are lots of dangers in drug abuse: many families have endangered the lives of their loved ones through self-medication nowadays, there are many children with one deformity or the other, this is so because their mothers abused drug during pregnancies. There abound cases of children who lost their lives due to the ignorance of their parent. We have heard of cases of the importation and exportation of hard drug in the country in which it impaired the images and the reputation of this country, it has even destroy the future of the youths which are the leaders of tomorrow. We must thank the doggedness of the law enforcement agents for bringing this entire miscreant to book. We’re also pleading to pleading that they should try their possible best to eradicate this act entirely. Our nation prestige and honor are not spared the gruesome effect of the social malaise called. Many Nigerians travelling abroad are subjected to derogatory search at the points of entry into other countries. This has destroyed our international image as many Nigerians are known to be carriers and couriers of the hard drugs.
Conclusively, it is certain that drug abuse has posed a lot of dangers to our society and the government has to do something about it, they should organize programs and orientations of drug abuse and its causes to health, our people need to be enlightened about the dangerous consequence of drug abuse. Government should forbid private medical stores from selling drugs to the public without prescription from a certified medical doctor. The drug enforcement agents are not left out in this, try their possible best to eradicate the heinous act entirely from our dear country. If these pieces of advice are taken into consideration, I believe the pace of drug abuse will be abated.
