She has earned the revered Mary McCarthy Award for her work as a writer and prominent public awareness on social issues.
She became the first Nigerian to receive the prestigious award at an event that held at Bard College, New York recently.
The Mary McCarthy Prize in short fiction includes a $2,000 cash award, publication of a collection of short stories or novella and a standard royalty contract.
The award is named after famous novelist, Mary McCarthy, who taught at Bard College for a year. It is given in acknowledgement of engagement in the public sphere by an intellectual, artist or writer.
In 2005, Chimamanda won the Commonwealth Writers' Prize: Best First Book (Africa) and Commonwealth Writers' Prize: Best First Book (overall) for her debut story, Purple Hibiscus.
In 2007, she won the Orange Broadband Prize: Fiction category for her second novel, Half Of A Yellow Sun.
In 2013, she won the Chicago Tribune Heartland Prize: Fiction category for her most recent novel, Americanah.
She has won 15 prominent awards since she started writing professionally.
