Edo Assembly elects new Speaker

IN order to balance the political tripod in the state, members of Edo State House of Assembly, yesterday, elected a new Speaker, Justin Okonoboh, representing Igueben constituency in the House. He is taking over from Mrs Elizabeth Ativie, who is now the Deputy Speaker of the House. The change in leadership followed a motion by the Majority Leader, Foly Ogedengbe, (Owan East), who explained that the change was endorsed by 18 lawmakers. It was seconded by Chris Okaeben (Oredo East).

Consequently, Okonoboh assumed the position of the Speaker immediately after the former Speaker, Ativie, stepped down to become the Deputy Speaker with the suspension of relevant rules of the House. Ogedengbe explained that the change was in pursuance of the effort by the leadership of All Progressives Congress, APC, in the state to balance the political tripod in the state. After taking his oath of office, Okonoboh explained that the leadership change which took place on the floor of the House on May 3, this year, affected the political equation of the state, hence the latest change became necessary so as to give a sense of belonging to the three senatorial districts of the state.
