ALMIGHTY MATRICULATION
September 1st 2016 will be a day to remember. It is a special day in the history of Obafemi Awolowo University. Not only is it the long awaited matriculation for freshmen but it is also the 1st day of 'Ember' month 2016 and off course a day that the world will experience another Eclipse.Since Monday 29th August 2016, the unbeatable and evergreen citadel of learning has been busy with different activities to mark her forth coming matriculation for the 2015/2016 admitted students whose number is nothing less than 7500. Matriculation day is a day set aside by the authorities of a higher institution to formerly welcome her freshmen and as an initiation by swearing the oath of the institution. On such day, oath pledging to abide by the school rules and regulations are sworn by freshers and punishments will follow if any rules are broken. Freshers will be matriculated into Great Ife. One a long awaited matriculation like this it is almost impossible to keep a frowning face.
However, campus has been bubbling. Trade fair in SUB are offering goods at cheaper rate. Soon to matriculate OAU fresh girls are already plating their hair with various styles, buying 10 inches shoe which will not allow these 'sisi ekos' to walk. Artificial eye lashes has made some more beautiful and others a monument that can not be look upon. Make up artist have their numbers pasted everywhere on campus just to give some girls extra touch to their God given beauty. Some christian sisters want to remain natural on that day like real African beauties. They can even go on to tie their hair during the matriculation using church scarf. Muslim sisters are getting their best hijab ready, some don't mind if it will drag along with them on the ground like wedding gown.
Guys are also not taking things easy. Some have gone to have a barbing salon to shave their beard in preparation for the day. Some plan wearing vintage shirt, suit, and even 'agbada and sokoto' after all is there no difference between Great Ife matriculation gown and agbada! The matriculation gown will only fit Late wrestler Locozuna without any adjustments.
On matriculation day, 'concontion' rice, indomie noodles, 'akamu' (pap), beans are forbidden. The only accepted foods are Party jollof rice and chicken, ingredients filled fried rice and turkey, well pound yam with goat meat and assorted filled ogbolo soup.
Are our parents left out? No its one of their most happiest day. Mothers will tie the best ghele(head tie) and fathers will have the best smiles in their faces. Seeing that their wards are now in the university, without them we will not be here. They provided our needs till adulthood and will continue to do so. May God bless our parents.
All Great ife freshers have waited for this day considering how we have been delayed after post utme. Its truly a day of joy. But time and tide waits for no man. In few years from now we will become FYB, let us develop ourselves, be positive at all times. So that when we look back to September 1st 2016,we will have a tangible reason to thank God for making us fulfilled because a graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University Great Ife is more than a Conqueror. Enjoy your matriculation and I hope you experienced the lunar eclipse?
